Lighting Your Home

Quoizel LightingLighting can make a big difference in the interior environment of your home. Good lighting used properly helps you to see better and perform tasks more easily. It also provides safety, security and a sense of comfort. Lighting and lighting controls also provide you with the flexibility to adjust and adapt the mood and ambiance of your home.

Lighting fixtures are ideal, and often inexpensive, accessories to supplement the interior design of your home. With an unlimited range of styles, shapes, colors and sizes, lighting fixtures can add sparkle and a final, finishing touch to your décor.

Properly used lighting should complement your lifestyle and meet your family's needs. When planning your home's lighting, keep these tips in mind:
  • Identify the activities that occur in each room (reading, food preparation, hobby work, grooming, laundry, homework, etc.).
  • Identify the mood or ambiance that you want to create in each space.
  • Identify any decorative elements you wish to emphasize, such as artwork or wall textures.
  • Identify areas with dark wall colors and finishes. These areas absorb more light than those with lighter finishes, so supplemental lighting may be required.

MONEY WISE: HGTV Touts Lighting Updates to Add Home Value

Lighting can affect a home's value, according to HGTV's Front Door. The publication recently stated that understanding the different types of home lighting is crucial to brightening a space in the correct way. Leslie Sellers, president of the Appraisal Institute, says, "lighting sets the overall mood for your home. Washing the walls with the correct light will make a room feel more inviting, and many times, much bigger."

HGTV's Front Door lists changing out lighting as one of the five best value projects to add appeal to your home. Other value adding projects: cleaning and decluttering, painting, updating cabinet hardware, and ad
ding decorative molding.
Lighting can completely transform a space by affecting mood, enhancing the design and architecture, facilitating specific tasks, and creating a focal point. A popular lighting trend is the use of LEDs (light-emitting diodes). Though more expensive than regular incandescent light bulbs, LEDs last much longer, are more durable, do not flicker and withstand temperature fluctuations.

To bring out the best in your home, it is imperative to understand the different types of light sources. For example, some areas, such as a kitchen, require task lighting, while other areas, such as a bathroom, may need more ambient lighting, and other rooms will need various light combinations.

Bulb Basics Beginning in 2012, new light bulb efficiency standards will affect which bulbs are available in stores. Here's what you need to know.

  • CHANGE A BULB: Which bulbs are being affected by new legislation?
Contrary to what many people think, standard incandescent bulbs are not being banned, they are simply going to be more efficient. The bulbs most commonly used by consumers today will not meet the new requirements.
Over the next two years, the new requirements will affect 100-watt, 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt medium screw-base incandescent light bulbs. These bulbs will be replaced with more efficient halogen bulbs, which are a type of incandescent.

  • TIMELINE for implementing new standards for incandescent bulbs in the United States:

By January 2012, all new medium screw-base bulbs will have more comprehensive labeling to help consumers understand and compare each type of light bulb. Information on new bulb labels includes: lumens (brightness), estimated yearly cost, life expectancy, light appearance and energy used.  New labeling requires that the lumen output be printed directly on each bulb.

  • Jan. 1, 2012     100 Watt

  • Jan. 1, 2013     75 Watt

  • Jan. 1, 2014     60 Watt Lamp; 40 Watt

    • ARE CFLs SAFE TO USE, considering they contain mercury?
According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) in the U.S. contain an average of 4 miligrams or less of mercury. For comparison, an old fashioned mercury thermometer contains 125 times more mercury than one CFL. For that matter, there is more mercury in one bite of albacore tuna than in one CFL. While there is no evidence that exposure to the mercury in a broken bulb presents a health risk, information for safely cleaning up when a CFL breaks is available from the EPA at www.epa.gov/cfl.
