What is the best way to add more lighting in my dark brown, 15-by-22-foot living room? It has western exposure and only one set of sliding glass doors.


Without adding ceiling fixtures, the simple solution is to increase the number of table and floor lamps. For best results, use compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs designated as "warm white," "soft white" or "residential."


To determine how much light is needed, multiply the square footage of the room by three if using incandescent lighting, or multiply by one if using all CFLs. A 15-by-22-foot room equals 330 square feet, which equals 990 watts of incandescent light, or 330 watts of fluorescent light.

All it takes is a few small upgrades and improvements in lighting to make a huge impact on the warmth and inviting feel of your home. The right lighting is extremely important. Using a dimmer will help create the perfect ambience for indoor activities.

In a room where a central lighting fixture dominates the space, dimming allows that fixture to provide a more subtle and comfortable light, and lets other fixtures provide appropriate contrast. The addition of one or two portable light fixtures will help set the perfect stage, especially if they are connected to a table-top dimmer.

RIGHT LIGHT: As Time Goes By, Eyes Need More Light

As people age, changing the surrounding lighting can go a long way to enhance reading ability and increase comfort.

Everyone experiences changes in their eyesight as they age. Around age 45, most people start to notice a diminishing ability to focus on close objects. For many, it means using reading glasses to read a menu, newspaper or other small print. By 60, most people have a fixed focus optical system and need glasses. After age 60, eye and visual system changes accelerate, so less light reaches the eye and more light is needed to see details.
Research shows that a 60-year-old needs twice as much light as a 30-year-old. Most of the commonly found lighting guidelines are written with the 30-year-old in mind.
If you or someone in your home is older, turn on a portable lamp while watching TV to help reduce the contrast that occurs between the bright screen and the surrounding darkness of the room. Experts recommend using a table lamp or torchiere that provides an uplight as well downward illumination for versatility. Look for a lamp with a separate task light attached or with a glass bowl at the top that will bring some light downward.

Learn the Truth About New Lighting Standards

While much has been reported about new lighting standards signed into law recently, some information is confusing and inaccurate. Following are some important facts:

• Incandescent lights are not going away.
• Decorative bulbs will not be affected. The new standards apply only to typical screw-type bulbs that are 40, 60, 75 or 100 watts. 
• You will continue to have a variety of choices when purchasing lights, including compact fluorescent, incandescent, halogen and LED.
• The new bulbs will save you money by lasting longer and using less energy.
• The U.S. will gain new manufacturing jobs as bulb manufacturers retool to meet increased demand for the more efficient lights.

A Quick Guide to SIZING & HANGING YOUR CHANDELIER

Chandeliers are designed to float in a room as an important part of the decor. Too large and this fixture will overpower the space. Too small and it will look out of place. Placing a chandelier that is too small in a space is likely the biggest mistake. Great designers, therefore, tend to make their decisions on fixtures that may appear slightly larger than might be appropriate. It's generally always best to make the mistake on a fixture being too big than too small.

 To make sure your chandelier is the right size for the room in which it will hang, consider the following:

1. How high is your ceiling?  Taller ceilings demand larger fixtures.
2. What is the size and shape of your table? Island? The chandelier should complement, not overpower, anything you plan to suspend it over.
3. How big is the room you are trying to illuminate? Again, be sure the chandelier is not too big or too small for the room.
4. What is the form and design of the chandelier? Light, airy fixtures tend to look smaller.
   
   

MEASUREMENT Guidelines


To size a chandelier for your dining room, or to be the focal point of your space, measure the length and width of the room and add those figures together. The sum, converted to inches, will equal the diameter that you can use as a guideline when selecting the size of your chandelier.
 

If the resulting measurement (room length + width, converted to inches) seems inappropriate due to the size of your table, size your chandelier three quarters the width of your table.


In most cases, the bottom of your chandelier should sit approximately 30"–32" above the table top.


Sizing a Chandelier FOR YOUR FOYER

When determining whether to hang a flush, semi-flush, or multi-tiered chandelier in your foyer, be advised that the bottom of the fixture should be at least 7' from the floor.



For two-story foyers, if there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside.

If your foyer is extra-large, you may also want to add sconces. Sconces should be installed 60" from the floor and 6'–8' apart.
