Don't waste energy or time by working in a dim space. A task area, whether for cooking, office work or laundry, is more efficient when illuminated properly. Prepare your work space by providing three main layers of light:

What is the proper number of recessed cans for a 12-foot by 17-foot kitchen?
A good rule of thumb for a kitchen is to use recessed lighting with 75-watt PAR light bulbs with a flood distribution. These are halogen reflector lamps, which efficiently direct the light out from the can to the surface being illuminated. Place the fixtures around the perimeter of the room (30 inches away from the wall) and approximately 6 feet apart.

How high should pendant lights be placed above a counter with bar stools?
Generally, the bottom of the pendants should not be lower than 5½ feet above the floor. This allows for a clear view across the room from both a seating and standing position.

Replacing your existing can lights is not difficult. An experienced electrician can do it with ease. First, determine what type of can is currently installed by removing the bulb, and gently pulling down the trim/reflector inserted in the can. When the trim/reflector is removed, a label with the brand name and model number should be visible inside. That information will enable you to find a proper replacement trim that is adjustable and will provide the desired accent lighting.

The publication recently stated that understanding the different types of home lighting is crucial to brightening a space in the correct way. Leslie Sellers, president of the Appraisal Institute, says, "lighting sets the overall mood for your home. CHANGE A BULB: Which bulbs are being affected by new legislation?

Contrary to what many people think, standard incandescent bulbs are not being banned, they are simply going to be more efficient. The bulbs most commonly used by consumers today will not meet the new requirements.

Over the next two years, the new requirements will affect 100-watt, 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt medium screw-base incandescent light bulbs. These bulbs will be replaced with more efficient halogen bulbs, which are a type of incandescent.

TIMELINE for implementing new standards for incandescent bulbs in the United States:

By January 2012, all new medium screw-base bulbs will have more comprehensive labeling to help consumers understand and compare each type of light bulb. Information on new bulb labels includes: lumens (brightness), estimated yearly cost, life expectancy, light appearance and energy used. New labeling requires that the lumen output be printed directly on each bulb.

ARE CFLs SAFE TO USE, considering they contain mercury?

According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) in the U.S. contain an average of 4 miligrams or less of mercury. For comparison, an old fashioned mercury thermometer contains 125 times more mercury than one CFL. For that matter, there is more mercury in one bite of albacore tuna than in one CFL. While there is no evidence that exposure to the mercury in a broken bulb presents a health risk, information for safely cleaning up when a CFL breaks is available from the EPA at www.epa.gov/cfl.

Without adding ceiling fixtures, the simple solution is to increase the number of table and floor lamps. For best results, use compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs designated as "warm white," "soft white" or "residential."

To determine how much light is needed, multiply the square footage of the room by three if using incandescent lighting, or multiply by one if using all CFLs. A 15-by-22-foot room equals 330 square feet, which equals 990 watts of incandescent light, or 330 watts of fluorescent light.

A Quick Guide to SIZING & HANGING YOUR CHANDELIER

Chandeliers are designed to float in a room as an important part of the decor. Too large and this fixture will overpower the space. Too small and it will look out of place. Placing a chandelier that is too small in a space is likely the biggest mistake. Great designers, therefore, tend to make their decisions on fixtures that may appear slightly larger than might be appropriate. It's generally always best to make the mistake on a fixture being too big than too small.

To make sure your chandelier is the right size for the room in which it will hang, consider the following:

How high is your ceiling? Taller ceilings demand larger fixtures.
What is the size and shape of your table? Island? The chandelier should complement, not overpower, anything you plan to suspend it over.
How big is the room you are trying to illuminate? Again, be sure the chandelier is not too big or too small for the room.
What is the form and design of the chandelier? Light, airy fixtures tend to look smaller.

MEASUREMENT Guidelines

To size a chandelier for your dining room, or to be the focal point of your space, measure the length and width of the room and add those figures together. The sum, converted to inches, will equal the diameter that you can use as a guideline when selecting the size of your chandelier.

If the resulting measurement (room length + width, converted to inches) seems inappropriate due to the size of your table, size your chandelier three quarters the width of your table.

In most cases, the bottom of your chandelier should sit approximately 30"–32" above the table top.

Sizing a Chandelier FOR YOUR FOYER

When determining whether to hang a flush, semi-flush, or multi-tiered chandelier in your foyer, be advised that the bottom of the fixture should be at least 7' from the floor.

For two-story foyers, if there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside.

If your foyer is extra-large, you may also want to add sconces. Sconces should be installed 60" from the floor and 6'–8' apart.

Of course bathroom lighting needs to be functional, but that doesn't mean it also can't be beautiful. It's a misconception from years past that bathrooms must be brightly lit. Bathrooms do require a certain amount of practical light to support practical activities that are performed in the bathroom, such as styling your hair or applying makeup. However, layers of light can be most effective in the bathroom because it can provide the ability to control the lighting depending on the task at hand.

TASK LIGHTING

The best vanity lighting utilizes cross illumination, which provides shadow-free lighting. In other words, you need a lighting solution over the vanity, as well as on both sides of the vanity, which lights the face evenly, and achieves the “cross-illumination” effect.

Sconces can easily provide general, task, or accent lighting. Many sconces are designed to match and compliment our chandelier and foyer families. Sconce lighting can be used in all areas of the home, and are often used as accent lighting above a mantle or fireplace, above a buffet in the dining area, or lining a stairway or hall.

TIP: When hanging a sconce, remember in most cases it should be hung at least 60" from the floor. When hanging two sconces on either side of a mirror or other focal point, space the sconces appropriately according to other decorative elements.

How to choose the right lamp for your

Living Room

Think of living-room lamps as one part light and one part sculpture. They should be lovely to look at whether on or off. Just make sure they don't block the view or get in the way of conversation.

Height: Most living rooms can handle a lamp that's 26 to 34 inches tall. "But you don't want to be looking up into the hardware," says Jamie Young, a Los Angeles lighting designer. To see if your lamp is right for a given table, sit on the sofa or the chair next to it, she says. "The bottom of the shade shouldn't fall higher than eye level."

Base: Even a skinny, candlestick-style base should be substantially weighted so those who talk with their hands don't rock the lamp if they bump it accidentally.

Positioning: Rooms should have a light source every 10 feet or so. If a lamp is on a table between a sofa and a chair, "consider a thin or transparent base," says Steven Sclaroff, an interior designer in New York, "so sight lines―and conversation―flow freely."

Shade: A fabric or semiopaque paper shade gives a warm, flattering glow. Near a TV, an opaque shade of any material can minimize glare. In general, drum shades look more modern; conical ones, more traditional. A shade should never extend past a table's perimeter.

Bulb: If you intend to use your lamp for reading, make sure the bulb is at least 60 watts; a three-way bulb or a dimmer will modulate the brightness.

Style: A living room is a great place for a lamp made from a favorite object, such as a vase. Most lighting-repair stores can help with the wiring.

A home decorating show I saw recently reminded me of these really neat lights that Hudson Valley Lighting offers. The interior designer on the show was transforming a man's apartment with a very masculine, old world style of decor. Think dark chocolate leather furniture, vintage world map-like artwork, and a vintage trunk as a coffee table! The wall sconces she chose were what really peaked my interest! She found them at an estate sale which genuinely made them old and perfect for the apartment! After an accident left the glass shades broken, she decided to use nostalgic edison style bulbs in the sconces instead of replacing the glass. The sconces looked incredible and added so much style and character to the overall look of the room! The Heirloom collection by Hudson Valley uses these very same bulbs to give them their vintage style. Although this collection has a very specific style its applications are endless! We just got this incredible fixture from the June market put up in the showroom last week and it sold the SAME DAY! I guess everyone agrees that it is a great piece. No worries if you love it too, we will be getting another one in very soon! It came to us from Crystorama Lighting. They are a company that has been with us for a while now. Every market we seem to only pick up a few pieces but they are always REALLY great!! Crystorama was initially founded as a primary importer of crystal chandeliers from Northern Czechoslovakia and offered the finest selection of classical crystal designs. I am excited to share with you three one of a kind furniture collections we just unloaded off the truck today! Guildmaster is a company made up of 400 artisans who individually handcraft each piece. In cleaning out their warehouse recently they discovered about 100 mahogany pieces that were built and ready for finishing. A lot of these pieces were prototypes and first run furniture that never got completed! Guildmaster handed these pieces over to their artisans and gave them complete artistic freedom to create a stunning piece of art! Vendor Spotlight: Kalco Lighting

Kalco Lighting offers a hand-forged product varying from contemporary to traditional to everything in between! Artisans in their Las Vegas, Nevada factory hand paint each fixture using various layering techniques. These unique finishes have become Kalco's hallmark! Each piece is handcrafted making it truly a work of art.

One of the really great things about Kalco is their use of natural materials in their shades. They use materials such as buddha leaf, iridescent shell, penshell, and calcite. Like many of our other vendors who offer a handcrafted product, Kalco offer its customers the ability to order custom fixtures.

This Tribecca fixture is a beautiful example of the incredible ironwork done by this company. You can see their use of penshell in the glass!

This piece is an example of what the buddha leaf glass looks like!

This piece is made using the calcite material. Until I saw it in person a few years ago I never knew how cool this really was! This calcite is actually a mineral mined in Utah. When made into this shade it has somewhat of a candle like appearance. When the fixture is lit it gives off an incredibly warm glow!

The Windsor collection is fairly new to to Kalco Lighting. The stained Mica shades are amazing and really make the fixtures! We have a few pieces from this collection in stock. Come see for yourself what i'm talking about!

What's Your Lighting Style?

Picking out lighting for you home can be a more difficult task than you think! There are so many different kinds of lighting that it helps if you start by understanding your style. Are you traditional and enjoy warm colors and antique furniture? Do you feel inspired by nature and like decorating with a cool color palette of greens and blues? Are clean lines and simplicity in your surroundings important to you? For each of these types there is a corresponding lighting style.
Traditional:

Traditional lighting is very non-jarring and predictable. Most fixtures are made of darker metals with understated details. Like the traditional rooms that they are placed in, they are very comfortable and add to the overall homey feel. Often traditional lights are reproductions. Neutral and plainly decorated shades are often used in traditional lighting.

Contemporary:

You could say that contemporary lighting is the complete opposite of Traditional. Bright chrome finishes replace the traditional black and bronze. Bright colors accent most pieces and there is nothing understated about it! Contemporary lights are eye catching and are often the center piece of a contemporary space. Clean lines and simplicity are characteristic of most contemporary spaces and the lights often reflect the same!

Transitional:

The term transitional is fairly new in the lighting world. It is used to define a place somewhere between traditional and contemporary lighting. If you say to yourself, "I love the clean lines of contemporary but the chrome is just too much for me!" or "If they just removed the crystals and ivory shades from that chandelier it would be perfect!” than transitional just may be your style. Also referred to as "Bronze Contemporary," transitional lighting is often very clean and simple but of a darker finish. Transitional lighting also tends to stay away from the colorful accents that many contemporary fixtures boast but still preserves its clean simplicity.

Mission/Arts and Crafts:

Many companies who manufacture their products here in the US exemplify this style! Most are handmade/forged using natural elements such as iron and wood. Mission style lights usually showcase patina and worn finishes giving them a very rustic and heirloom look. Mica and art glass are often used in this style of fixture. Their design also showcases a pronounced geometry.

French Country:

This is a popular decorating style especially in the south. Wood furniture and floral accents are used as well as rustic materials such as stone and brick. Basic fabrics of plaids, checks, and stripes are often used in shades for lamps and chandeliers. French country lighting often uses white or ivory finishes and may even be decorated with roosters, flowers, or fruit.

Hopefully this has helped you to at least begin thinking about your lighting style! Decorating your home or office can sometimes be challenging on your own. Today is Memorial Day and I am feeling very patriotic! I thought it was only fitting that I highlight a few lighting companies who manufacture right here in the U.S.

"Since the late 1980's, Arroyo Craftsman has provided the finest in Arts & Crafts inspired lighting; honoring this tradition of elegant simplicity and quality craftsmanship." They hand-craft each piece individually out of raw brass. Their naturally oxidized finishes sometimes take days to cure! Their lights can be found in many historical landmarks such as The Grove Inn and many of Frank Lloyd Wrights homes. What is really great about American handmade lights are that they are almost always fully customizable! From glass to finishes to even the size of your fixture you can choose it all.

Framburg is another lighting company that makes its products right here in the States. In 1905 Framburg was founded by Henry Alfred Framburg in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout its history Framburg has been a great support in many of our Wars. During World War I Framburg made searchlights for the Armed Services and during World War II Framburg manufactured ship recognition models to train our forces to be able to recognize Allied versus Axis ships. Framburg has a reputation for high quality, commercial grade lighting fixtures that are also very beautiful!

Fine Art Lamps is a company who produces just that, Fine Art! When the company first began, the finest designers, sculptors, artisans, and decorative artists were assembled to make up it's creative team. The company developed an artistic standard that has come to symbolize the Fine Art Lamps name today.

They made a "pledge to manufacture in the United States of America, based on the belief that this insures design integrity, quality control, reliable delivery, and personal service." As with the other American companies I mentioned, all of their fixtures are handmade which allow them to be customizable!

Last but not least is Hubbardton Forge!! This is a really neat company we brought in fairly recently. They are based out of Vermont and just like there name states each piece is hand-forged. When we first brought in Hubbardton we learned all about their manufacturing process and how their company works. Their passion for what they do is evident in not only their products but in their employess as well!! They are the oldest and largest commercial forge in the country with a team of over 200 people creating functional works of art from raw metal.

Pink Lightbulbs: A surprising way to cozy up a space!!

In honor of our Visual Merchandiser John, I am writing a post on Pink Lightbulbs. He is always telling us how great pink lightbulbs are and that they make you beautiful! Well we have always been skeptical until he found this article backing up his claim. I havent switched my lights out to pink bulbs yet but after reading this article I just may!!!

"Lighting transforms a space. A room can feel small and cramped or it can feel warm and cozy depending on how it is lit. There are many aspects to creating good lighting, but changing the light bulbs you use is one of the simplest things you can do.
Most people are aware that fluorescent light bulbs leave a cold, bare feeling in a room. They can even make us feel stressed when we aren’t worried or strained otherwise. Incandescent bulbs and full-spectrum are better. But even better yet, are pink incandescent bulbs.
Sylvania and GE both make 60 watt and 3 way bulbs that emit an amazing glow. They are better than any other bulb to warm up a room. Basic white, incandescent bulbs and full-spectrum bulbs tend to create shadows and give a stark feel to a room. They cast a blue tone in the room that can detract from warm wall colors rather than accentuate them.
Pink bulbs, on the other hand, emit just as much light as standard bulbs and produce a warm, cozy feel. They are also easier to read by because you have less glare and starkness against the page. They are also easier on the eyes.
Many of my clients try these and end up exclusively using pink bulbs in their homes. One client needed to make a windowless, basement room an inspiring office. The first thing he did was to switch to pink light bulbs. It made a huge difference.
Many designers use these bulbs because the warm tones make peoples skin tones more attractive and alive looking. Restaurants and hospitals wanting to create a friendly, calming atmosphere put pink bulbs throughout thier buildings. Everyone looks better in this light. Plants, color on the walls, art, furniture, rugs, even the lamp the pink bulbs are in all look better with these transforming bulbs.
Don’t let the pink package fool you. Many people see the package and think of them as party bulbs, not for everyday use. Essentially these bulbs are only tinted; they are not pink. Putting them in your home or office, no one would detect you have put a different color bulb in your space. They would only detect that your home your home feels inviting and comfortable. But in truth these are only bulbs you need in your home.

With the world looking to a greener future, incadescent lightbulbs are becoming a thing of the past! We are being told to throw out those old style bulbs and replace them with the more energy efficient fluorescent and LEDs. But do we really have to just throw them out??? I was thinking about that today and my pack rat- do it yourself attitude told me to surf the web to see what I could find. Below are some of the coolest ideas I came across!! This past January we attended the International Lighting Market in Dallas, Texas. All of our vendors were there and debuted some fantastic new products! A lot of the new merchandise has been coming in over the past few months and I noticed a trend in some of the metal finishes of the lights we've been receiving.
